The Funnel Arrives on the Bay
It was full steam ahead at Mermaid Quay in Cardiff Bay last week – as work to extend Cadwaladers Ice Cream Café continued during the night with the installation of a new feature funnel.
The 900kg galvanised steel and aluminium structure was winched into place by a large crane located on the quayside before being secured on the roof of the newly extended Cadwaladers. Standing 2.3m high the 3.8m long x 1.3m wide iconic funnel creates an attractive housing – in keeping with the location of the pier over the waters of Cardiff Bay - for a new ventilation system and condenser.
Due to open at the end of May, our new café will have additional outdoor seating for up to 50 customers, allowing the popular café to cater for its ever-increasing number of visitors and in addition bring our 'Live Jazz' evenings to Cardiff Bay.
The funnel is an iconic part of Mermaid Quay’s architecture, however, the previous one became too small once the building was extended. We were obviously keen to retain the feature and are delighted with the result.
Work is now really pressing ahead and we hope to welcome you all to our newly refurbished shop very soon.
